When to make an appointment with a gynaecologist?
The best time for a regular check-up is a few days after the end of your period – this is when it is advisable to take a cytology. Of course, your doctor will carry out a gynaecological examination on each day of your cycle, only during bleeding a cytology test cannot be taken (its result would be unreliable).
What does a visit to the gynaecologist look like?
The gynaecological consultation begins with a medical history of the patient. The doctor will ask about the date of your last menstrual period, bothersome complaints, the presence of infections or discomfort. If you have the results of hormonal tests, he or she will certainly analyse them. During the gynaecological examination itself, the doctor will look at the external genitalia to make sure there is no sign of infection. In a woman who is having intercourse, he or she will proceed to insert a speculum to visualise the vaginal part of the cervix. This is the ideal time to take a cytology! The next stage is a transvaginal ultrasound – on the camera screen, the doctor will assess the structure of your uterus and ovaries.
Should a virgin also go to a gynaecologist?
Absolutely yes! In women who are not having intercourse, the doctor carries out an assessment of the external genital organs and the cervix, and cytology can also be taken. The only difference is in the course of the ultrasound examination – it can be performed through the abdominal integuments (necessarily with a full bladder!) or through the rectum (rarely performed, usually in the case of suspected abnormalities that cannot be clearly seen through the abdomen).
Which method of contraception to choose?
There are many methods of contraception – the pill, patch, implant, IUD and copper. We offer you a wide range of options, but your health is the priority when choosing a contraceptive method. Together with your doctor, you will make the right decision. It matters how you react to hormones, whether you have already given birth and how “long-lasting” you want the contraception to be (in the case of IUDs, protection lasts up to five years!). Even if you have already chosen a contraceptive method, discuss its advantages and disadvantages with your doctor and make sure you have no contraindications. And don’t forget to have regular check-ups!
How often to attend an obstetric consultation?
At first, doctors recommend maternity visits no later than every 4 weeks. The closer you get to the birth, the more frequent these visits will become – every 2 weeks, and shortly before the birth every week. Remember, however, that the frequency of visits is an individual matter, depending on how your pregnancy is going. In addition, as part of an obstetric consultation after the 32nd week of pregnancy, it is possible to have an OCTG, which is a recording of the baby’s heart rate and uterine contractions. The recording of the test is assessed by your doctor, it can be an indication that the birth is just around the corner!
How is a I/II/III trimester ultrasound different from an obstetric consultation?
Each of these tests has a well-defined course and measurements to be taken. Prenatal tests are carried out by doctors who are specially trained for this and certified by the FMF (Fetal Medicine Foundation). In the first trimester, an assessment of the risk of genetic defects is carried out, so this is an extremely important examination. In the second and third trimester, the baby is measured in detail to check that he or she is growing proportionately and has no apparent systemic defects.
During a ‘normal’ obstetric consultation, the doctor checks that the pregnancy is developing correctly, measures the fetal heart rate, assesses the amount of foetal water, the position of the baby and determines its size and, later, its weight.
